HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

The school is named after Emrys ap Iwan who was born on 24th March 1851 at Bryn Aber, Llanfair Road, Abergele.

He trained as a Calvinistic Methodist Minister, and was influential as a Welsh writer and preacher. At one time he ran a school at Rhuallt and showed a great deal of originality in his work with young people. Held in high esteem throughout Wales, it is fitting that the school bears his name.

Before the reorganisation of local government in 1974, the school served the county of Denbigh, but even before that time it accepted students from what was then the Flintshire Authority. In 1974 the school's population was 672, and it now well exceeds 1500. The catchment area of 60 square miles has been traditionally large. The school gained Grant Maintained Status in January 1993. It is now a highly successful, self-governing school within the state sector.

Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan was established in 1967 and was formed by the amalgamation of Abergele Grammar School and Dinorben Secondary Modern School. The Grammar School was established in 1899 and the Dinorben Site was built in 1938.
