Sixth form enter British Biology Olympiad

Learners at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan who are studying Biology AS and A2 have entered the British Biology Olympiad.

They had to demonstrate their knowledge of Biology through a challenging online multiple choice paper.

Suzanne Jones, Key Stage 5 Leader of Science, said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the learners to expand and extend their knowledge. Their participation in the competition supports their study beyond A level and is very beneficial if they wish to study Biology at university.”

There is a range of rewards including medals, certificates culminating in the opportunity to represent the UK at the International Biology Olympiad where over 60 countries take part.

The Learners are very excited at the opportunity to take part. They see it as valuable in developing their skills, which will support them through university and into their future careers.

Georgia Lunt said, “It’s exciting to be a part of something bigger that takes place across the country.”

Alex Dry added, “Having the opportunity to take part in the British Biology Olympiad will allow me to develop my critical thinking skills and lateral thinking.”

Jasmine Thomas believes, “Participating in the Olympiad will help me to develop critical skills that I believe will aid me in my chosen university course and my future career path as a midwife.”

The UK teams have had considerable success at the International Biology Olympiad. This assessment is the first stage for the Key Stage 5 learners.
