Geography field trips to support studies

Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan learners have been out and about around North Wales on various geography field trips to support their GCSE and A level studies.

Year 11 visited several sites along the River Alyn, finishing at Loggerheads. Their aim was to measure the width, depth and speed of the river at the various sites which helped them to understand how the river’s flow changed as they travelled downstream.

They also visited Llandudno to investigate if there was a need to improve access for pedestrians. They conducted pedestrian counts and questionnaires at Parc Llandudo to explore the issue.

Year 13 learners visited the sand dunes at Talacre. Their aim was to investigate how the ecosystem has changed and the effects of “trampling” on the dunes. They found that when people walk on the plants and grass it may prevent them from growing leaving bare sand which then allows further erosion by the wind creating a “blowout”.

Isobel Davies, Head of Geography, said: “Considering the recent unsettled weather we were really lucky to dodge the showers and get outside to collect the data we needed!! All the learners enjoyed their fieldwork experience.”

Mis Davies’ comments were supported by the learners with Ethan Evans saying that it was the: “Best experience on a school trip!” and Holly Owens felt it was: “A good opportunity to learn more.”
